Traveling the world is one of the most exciting things you can do - but after visiting 17 countries (and counting), we've learned that it's not always as easy as it looks online.
We're a Canadian couple behind Jet Lag & Lattes, and through missed flights, over packing, unexpected fees, and a lot of trial and error, we've picked up some essential travel tips that can truly make or break your trip.
If you're starting our of planning your next adventure, here are beginner travel tips that will save you time, money, and a whole lot of stress!
✈️1. Book Flights Strategically (It Can Save You Money)
One thing we've learned is that flights aren't always cheapest when booked as one full trip. Sometimes, it's actually cheaper to book each leg of your journey separately instead of booking one round-trip or connecting flight. For example, booking one flight to a major hub, then a second flight to your final destination can save you a significant amount of money.
BUT there's a catch..
When you book flights separately:
* You may need to leave security
* Collect your checked luggage
* Re-check your bags
* Go through security again
This can take extra time and adds a but of stress - especially in busy airports.
👉 Our Tip: Only do this if you leave yourself plenty of time between flights. The savings can be worth it, but you don't want to risk missing your next flight.
🧳2. Always Pack a Carry-On Essentials Bag
For years, we traveled with the bare minimum in our carry-on and thought we had it all figured out. Until one trip.. when a member of our group had a terrible bathroom accident mid travel and had absolutely nothing to change into before the next flight. It was honestly a disaster - and a very uncomfortable situation for everyone involved.
This was the moment we learned our lesson!
👉 No matter how light you pack, always bring a few essentials in your carry-on:
- An extra pair of underwear
- A change of clothes
- Wet wipes or tissues
You might not thing you will need it.. until you need it!
🛡️3. Get Travel Insurance
It might seem unnecessary - until something goes wrong.
Delays, cancellations, or medical emergencies can happen, and having insurance can save you thousands.
We were recently in Mexico with some friends and when I say everyone.. I mean everyone got sick. So sick that two of them needed to go to the hospital. Luckily they purchased medical insurance for the trip, otherwise the hospital bill would have cost them $7500 out of pocket. And believe it or not, this was their first trip outside of Canada.
☕Travel is about the little moments. It also doesn't; have to be overwhelming.
With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can save time, avoid necessary stress, and make the most of every trip!
